Many people only investigate their credit report after they’ve been denied a loan or given a very high interest rate. When it comes to responsibly managing your finances, your credit status, and your debt, it’s best to take on a proactive approach and make sure you know what’s going on in your credit report. Fortunately, South African legislation makes this easier for citizens by giving you access to a free credit report.

Credit bureaus

According to the National Credit Act, South Africans are entitled to one free credit report every year. You can obtain this annual free credit report from any one of the following credit bureaus: TransUnion, Compuscan, Experian, and XDS. If you would like a second credit report, you can get one for a minimal fee from any of the previously mentioned credit bureaus. You can even sign up for a service which sends you a monthly sms with your summarised credit report details.

It is your right to access this information, and after you’ve viewed your credit report, you will be able to ensure all the information is correct and challenge discrepancies. You are also able to use this information to improve your credit score, which in turn has a positive effect on your financial situation. Find out how to do this in our blog article, How to improve your credit score.
